Historique :	Tableau exécuté pour Gilbert de Bourbon Montpensier, qui acheva le palais d'Aigueperse et qui épousa en 1480 Claire de Gonzague, fille de Frédéric de Gonzague, marquis de Mantoue, patron de Mantegna. Ce tableau se trouvait dans la sainte chapelle d'Aigueperse et échappa ainsi à l'incendie qui ravagea le palais au milieu du 16e siècle.£La commande en 1490 d’une Nativité à Benedetto Ghirlandaio, que l’on sait en France entre 1486 et 1493, illustre bien le goût italianisant de la cour d’Aigueperse.
