Historique :	Image de piété mystique, la représentation de la Vierge tenant 'en son giron' le corps du Christ descendu de la croix, trouve ses origines au 14e siècle dans les vallées rhénanes et devient très populaire au Moyen-Age en Allemagne et en France. Cette statue est d'un type inhabituel pour l'Auvergne, elle semble davantage se rattacher aux créations d'Allemagne du Sud comme le suggère le détail spécifique du rabat circulaire du drapé, remarqué dans les oeuvres du gothique allemand tardif (Christine Labeille).
